Florida Dry Prairie & Flatwoods
Dry Prairie & Flatwoods: The dry prairie has low shrubs and grasses occupying vast, level expanses of land. The habitat is unique to Florida and is notable for a lack of trees. Natural fires occur more frequently in dry prairies. In addition, dry prairies hold water after a heavy summer rainfall for a longer time than do pine flatwoods. Periods of prolonged flooding also inhibit the growth of pine trees. Florida’s dry prairies covered about 1.2 million acres before major European settlement. Flatwoods are very similar but typically have pine forests.
