Mastering iNaturalist as a Citizen Scientist
Ever wondered about the name of that bright wildflower by the trail, or wanted to contribute to real-world wildlife conservation? Turn your smartphone into a powerful scientific tool! Join us for a hands-on, three-hour immersive workshop at Myakka River State Park, where you’ll learn how to navigate the free iNaturalist app and turn ordinary trail walks into data-gathering adventures.
Whether you are a complete tech novice or a seasoned hiker looking to deepen your nature knowledge, this workshop will give you the confidence to identify Florida’s unique ecosystems and share your discoveries with a global community of scientists.

Workshop Details
- Duration: 3 Hours
- Location: Myakka River State Park
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate walking pace on unpaved trails
- What to Bring: A fully charged smartphone, comfortable walking shoes, water, insect repellent, and your curiosity!
Workshop Schedule
Hour 1: The Citizen Science Launchpad
We’ll gather at the shaded pavilion to get set up. You’ll learn how the iNaturalist platform works and how your photos help scientists track biodiversity. We will walk you step-by-step through setting up your profile, adjusting privacy settings, and navigating the app’s interface. You’ll practice taking “test observations” right around the pavilion before we hit the trail.
Hour 2: The BioBlitz Trail Walk
Time to explore! We will take a slow-paced walk down the trail, looking closely at the hammocks and wetlands. You’ll practice photographing plants, insects, and signs of wildlife using the app. Learn tips for getting crisp, useful shots that the iNaturalist AI and community can easily identify—like capturing the underside of a leaf or the scales of a lizard.
Hour 3: The Identification Lab
We’ll head back to review our findings. You’ll learn how to upload your observations, interact with suggestions from the iNaturalist community, and explore the app’s map to see what other citizen scientists have found inside Myakka River State Park.
What You Will Learn
- Photography Best Practices: How to take clear diagnostic photos of flora and fauna that make identification a breeze.
- Using the AI Assistant: How to interpret the app’s automated species suggestions.
- Geo-Privacy Mastery: How to obscure the location of sensitive or endangered species to protect local wildlife.
- Connecting with the Community: How scientists and experts vet your observations to graduate them to “Research Grade” status.
Important Pre-Workshop Note: To maximize our time on the trail, please download the free iNaturalist app from the App Store or Google Play Store and create your free account before arriving at the park. Cellular service can be spotty under the dense palm canopy!
